Chameleon's New Feature Product Tour
Chameleon built this five-step tour to get people using its Insights section rather than clicking past it. Everyone who lands on the section sees the tour once, with each step covering a different tab. Anyone who exits early gets a second route in: a "Show me around" icon added to the end of the tab bar. Clicking it replays the same walkthrough on demand.
Built to look like it belongs
The "Show me around" trigger icon is a PNG designed to match the tabs beside it: same pill shape, same border, same icon-and-label layout, positioned in line at the end of the row. Users click it because nothing about it reads as a bolted-on widget. A floating help bubble in the corner announces itself as marketing, and gets ignored accordingly. A control that looks like part of the navigation gets treated like part of the navigation.
Opting in doubles the finish rate
Across Chameleon's customer base, self-launched tours finish at 61% on average. Auto-triggered tours finish at 30%. A user who clicked something is already committed to seeing where it goes. A user who got interrupted is hunting for the X before the first step has finished rendering. Handing over the trigger costs you reach and buys you attention.
Dismissing is not the same as declining
The icon only appears for people who closed the tour the first time. Rather than treating that exit as a no, Chameleon leaves a way back in, one click away on the page the tour applies to. Someone who dismisses a walkthrough is usually mid-task, not uninterested, and a dismissal that deletes the content forever punishes them for being busy. Turning the close button into "later" rather than "never" gives you a second shot at users you would otherwise have missed.
Replicate this with Chameleon
Build a tour to get users adopting a new area of your product.
- Target everyone who reaches the page the tour explains, so nobody misses it the first time
- Give users who exit early a way to relaunch it from the page itself
- Stop showing the tour automatically once someone has completed it
